How do you research your next holiday?
Posted by Industry on June 9, 2007
I guess that most people these days use the internet for finding the majority of information about their next holiday (I know I do), but there are other ways too such as…
- The old fashioned way of walking into the Retail Travel Agent & having a chat - this is still quite a popular choice, otherwise they wouldn’t be surviving.
- Getting recommendations from friends, co-workers or family members.
- The library - most of the time the travel guides are a little out of date, but they are still helpful.
- Local tourism offices generally have good information for your destination & sometimes they can tell you things that others can’t!
If anyone has any further suggestions, please feel free to leave a comment.

A variation on the above … use a local “onsite.” This is one of the resources that travel agents have that they can draw on, contacts with “onsite” tour operators in destinations around the world. They are experts on their own destination, often have very good negotiated prices with local hotels (because of the volume of bookings they make with them), can put together itineraries, and can offer private guides who have been “vetted” as being really knowledgeable with a good command of English.

I use the Internet 99% as my research tool for travel. I also use as references the many brochures I have picked up from other places I’ve visited.

We are an online travel agency, and get few walk-ins in our home town. But when most clients call in about vacations they have usually already researched every aspect of their trip they could get. This also can cause complications though, as they become stubborn at keeping to the information they found online, though it may not be accurate.
Great post, keep up the great work!
